When students arrive home from studying abroad, some think that they can just reenter their lives with no transition. But this may not be the case; in some student cases there are what they call reverse culture shock. This can happen even before you leave to come home. As the time comes closer for you to leave you will start to think about home more and more. You will
think about returning to your College and to your family and friends.
You will have to keep in mind that while you are excited to share your experiences abroad, not everyone will want to share every single experience. Especially if you have kept in touch with family and friends along the way. They may not want to hear everything all over again. Try to review what things you have and have not told them before and try to keep the information fresh. This may not seem fair but you have to remember that they have had their own experiences too and you have to share your “ floor” space with your family and friends.
When you return you will have to wean off practicing your foreign language that you used when you were studying abroad. You will have to go back to speaking your home language. You will also have to readjust to the time of your home country, if you were 6 hours ahead in the other country and returning home is going to be a huge adjustment. Jet lag is tough and it may take a week or so go get back to normal.
You will be glad to be home, studying abroad is a huge opportunity that you would normally not get to do. It is a once in a lifetime experience and you should do everything that you in order to savor that experience. One thing that you can do while you are in another country is take a lot of pictures. When you get home print them out or have them developed and make a scrapbook.
You can invite some friends or maybe your family to look at these pictures with you, so that you can share with them the experiences. It may be easier for family and friends to understand what you did when you were studying abroad if you show them pictures. Don’t get upset if your friends do not seem interested in hearing everything the first day you are back. They are existed to see you and they want you to relax and enjoy each other’s company.
If you were in a relationship before you left, it may not seem the same when you get back. Separation can be hard and with students in College they may not be as strong as a couple who have dated when they were a bit older. You will have to be careful when you talk about your overseas experience, it may make your significant other feel left out or a bit jealous. Try to share small parts of your experience at first; once they have readjusted to you coming home you can share more.
