Choosing Your Housing When Studying Abroad

Now that you have made the decision to study abroad, you have to decide whether or not to stay with a host family or stay in the dorm rooms on Campus. There are several things that you have to remember when choosing a place to stay when you are in another country. You are there to study in a different country so you want to take in the entire experience of that country, you
want to stay someplace safe and you are there to get an education as well.

Ask your self these questions when making that important decision.

1- Will you be wanting to practice the language of the country in which you are staying?
2- Would you like to sightsee as well as study?
3- Would you like to meet other students who are studying abroad?
4- Are you interested in learning how other families live and experience the country’s culture?

There are some good points and bad points on each topic. Let’s start with the Dorms. The positive things about staying in the Dorms is that you will get to meet other students from all over the world. You can still do this with staying with a host family but the chances of meeting a more diverse group is better. Another positive is that you will get to stay on Campus or right near it and you will have more freedom to do what you want and still live how you live at home since there are no rules that you have to stick by.

The negatives about staying at the dorms is if you were planning on practicing your foreign language in that country, you won’t get to do so as often. You may not have a roommate from the country where you are staying. You could wind up with a student from the same country as you (so that could be a positive too). You will have to eat on Campus and buy your own food.

Now the positives for staying in a host families environment is that you will learn the language of the country better since it is spoken in the home. You will have more exposure to the culture and the customs of that country. You will be more likely to actually see the sights of the city where you will be staying. A great bonus is that you will get to eat authentic home cooked meals from the country.

The negatives of staying with a host family are that if you are not fluent in their language then you may find it difficult and intimidating at times. You will have to follow the host family’s rules and curfews no matter what they are. You could have a long way to travel to the University. You may not enjoy the home cooked food all the time.

These are just some of the things to think about when deciding whether or not to stay with a host family or in the dorms. Weigh out your options and make the best decision for you.
